50 Years of Hell on Earth

50 years ago, HH Dalai Lama was being tested and examined by the most eminent scholars and masters in Tibet. The above photo shows him on horseback going from one monastery to the next. He eventually passed all his final exams and was unanimously considered to have come of age as the spiritual and temporal leader of Tibet.

The debates and exams were held in the open air with hundreds of on-lookers and Chinese soldiers - expecting the uprising that was to come - on every rooftop. He said of that time that he was so nervous and scared for the Tibetan people and what was to inevitably unfold in the days that followed.

His Holiness has been very quiet recently on the subject of Chinese rule in Tibet and has been promoting his Middle Way approach whenever pressed. This policy states that Tibet and China must work together to find a compromise that saves the Tibetan people and their rich but almost extinct culture, whilst acknowledging it will now never be free from Chinese rule.

Today, in Dharamsala, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama spoke with uncharacteristic force against the Chinese occupation of Tibet. The Chinese responded to the revolt of 50 years ago with utter brutality. Incredibly, however, conditions under the Chinese continue to be reported as having gone from bad to worse with each passing decade.

His Holiness' words came on the 50th anniversary [March 10] of the failed uprising against Chinese troops which led to his sudden exile.

Our hearts go out to the people of Tibet - those living through the ever-worsening situation inside Tibet, and those in exile.
