BRILLIANT MOON - New Documentary About Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche

Many thanks to Annie for informing me about this wonderful new documentary about Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and his reincarnation.

DKR was arguably the greatest master of Tibetan Buddhism in living memory and he was also the teacher of so many of those great masters who are still living.

I never met him, but DKR has always been somehow present to me since he nurtured and moulded two of my own spiritual teachers: Sogyal Rinpoche and Ringu Tulku Rinpoche.

There are so many stories of him and his beautiful presence that blogs utterly fail and even incredible documentaries like this one barely scratch the surface.

Yet, even just to see his image is so uplifting and inspiring.

I was in Kathmandu a few years ago and went to visit a Tibetan monastery in the early evening, but it had already closed. Myself and two friends had gone there hoping to see inside the famous temple at Shechen Monastery. However we had left it too late and the doors were locked until next morning and there was nobody around.
As we were walking away a monk approached us and asked if we would like to see 'Rinpoche'. Of course we immediately said we would love to, not knowing which Rinpoche it was going to be [as there are so many whose names end with that Tibetan word, meaning 'Precious One']

When we climbed the stairs to the top of the temple, and were eventually welcomed into the small private meeting room, we were struck quite dumb once we realised we were meeting a very young boy. It was the reincarnation of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche!

His English was already good and although he wasn't in the habit of meeting many foreigners [he was very much still in the process of being educated and trained], this precious young man was extremely open and chatty and curious.
He asked us questions about Ireland - the people and the climate. He even showed interest in discussing climate change.

Finally I plucked up the courage to speak unsolicited to him. I said, You must come to Ireland one day.

The little boy suddenly became quite a serious young man as he leaned forward to look me straight in the eye. Like we were now discussing something entirely different, some kind of pledge - from the heart, to the heart - he stared deep into me and simply said: Yes. I Will.

The Yangsi [reincarnation] of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche will once again begin travelling the world and teaching the buddha-dharma for the ultimate benefit of beings in 2010.
